Tips on Keeping Employees Happy
Allowing a Semi-Casual Dress Code
Employees that have a casual, stress-free time at work they will also be more productive. As the business owner or manager, it is your responsibility to set the ground rules before opening up this can of worms as semi-casual or casual has different meanings to different people It also depends on their face to face contact with clients. Before making this decision you will want to include all the key people to narrow down your guidelines. Another area on the dress is allowing for individuality so their passion and personality emerge. Dress codes are a thing of the past. Individuality trumps uniformity every time.
Make training available
We live in a world where a good majority believe in personal development. Make that available as a perk or at partial reimbursement. Offer training on a regular basis so they learn what each department does to create a better-educated employee. This helps them to be invested in the success of the company. Keep in mind today training can be done as a webinar on a platform like Zoom or Go to Meeting, so it doesn’t have to take them off location.
Provide tools needed
When employees feel appreciated and have the right tools to use it sets the stage for contentment and productivity. Give them the authority to make a decision based on the tools you give them and let them be. Do not micromanage them. It’s often much more effective to give your employees direction and tools to accomplish their goals than it is to set down rigid guidelines and a process they must follow.
Be approachable
Be open-minded and approachable without judgment. Make sure your employees have the vision for the company. Get them to buy in and you will have an employee for life. They will also go above and beyond when they feel you really care and they can be open with you. Having an open door policy is huge.
Compliment and give credit
A compliment may not cost you a dime, but it is priceless. A Thank You goes a long way in making someone feel appreciated. More important is to thank and give credit in front of their peers. You could also do this using an office newsletter. Keep in mind you must stay fair and not play favorites. Compliment and reward the behavior you want to emulate.
Customize rewards.
Every reward doesn’t have to be the same for each. You can even give options such as a $25 gift card to their place of choice, a day off, leave early, take to lunch etc. Tailor your rewards to the people and situations that earned them. You can even have a little fun in the office with special awards. This can even be done by voting in the office again as long as it is not leaving someone out that is going above and beyond but not their favorite person, or they feel is your office pet.
